  • Hiltwood

Natural soap built for men’s skin

Hiltwood soaps for men are crafted with natural, nourishing oils to cleanse your skin beautifully without drying.

Being made in limited runs ensures a superbly high quality soap bar with freshness you can feel.

Hiltwood use a thoughtful blend of ingredients to ensure their soap bars smell fantastic and are a pleasure to use every day, with the added reassurance that all their products are cruelty-free.

    Palm oil free soap
The production of palm oil is one of the leading causes of deforestation worldwide, threatening the survival of endangered species like orangutans and tigers. By choosing not to use palm oil, Hiltwood is taking a stand for the preservation of biodiversity and working to reduce our environmental footprint.

    Made in the UK
Hiltwood believes that integrity matters. They’re committed to sourcing ethical, sustainable ingredients that align with their values of fairness and respect for people and the planet.

    Better for your skin
Hiltwood‘s palm oil-free soap bars are also better for your skin. Many commercial soap bars and shower gels use palm oil derivatives like sulfates, which can strip the skin of its natural moisture. Hiltwood soaps are crafted with nourishing, plant-based oils and butters that cleanse effectively without causing dryness or irritation, leaving your skin feeling healthy and refreshed.

    Reduces waste
Finally, we’re passionate about reducing waste. Unlike many shower gels that come in plastic bottles, Hiltwood soap bars are packaged as sustainably as possible.

Cruelty-free, high quality ingredients with no nasties!
All of Hiltwood‘s products are cruelty-free as you would expect. Here are the highlights:

    Shea butter
For deeper moisturisation, Hiltwood uses shea butter which helps soothe dry or irritated skin, and supports skin elasticity. Its rich concentration of vitamins (A and E) and fatty acids nourishes the skin while promoting a healthy, smooth texture.

    Olive oil
Hiltwood uses what they call ‘heritage olive oil’; it’s a vital ingredient in their soaps as it gently caresses your skin, imparting a soothing moisture that leaves it feeling soft and supple.

    Coconut oil
Coconut Oil is another vital element in the cleansing process. It gently lifts away dirt and impurities, leaving your skin feeling refreshed and revitalised. Sustainably sourced, it’s a perfect choice for healthy skin and planet.

    Castor oil
Castor Oil – is Hiltwood‘s secret weapon for a superior clean. This oil doesn’t just enhance the lather; it powers up the cleansing action, leaving your skin feeling refreshed and ready for anything. Cold-pressed to maintain its potent properties, it’s a testament to nature’s power!

    Essential oils
Essential oils elevate men’s soap with a touch of nature’s best. Beyond their aromatic appeal, essential oils offer powerful skincare benefits – helping to cleanse, soothe, and rejuvenate your skin.

  • Buy Me Once

    Buy Me Once

Built to last: The joy of owning a well-made product

Wherever you look, fast fashion and cheap disposable gadgets dominate store shelves and websites. But is it Fool’s Gold? There’s something deeply satisfying about owning a product that’s built to last.

You know the kind — a cast iron skillet handed down from your grandma, or a trusty tool you’ve used for 20 years that’s still going strong. These items are more than just objects; they’re lifelong companions.

    Fab featured products!

My promise: 20% of any profits from commission I earn on purchases from Buy Me Once will go to good causes.

Form and function in perfect harmony

I can’t tell you how excited I am to discover this website!

As a designer myself, I appreciate that the beauty of a well-crafted product is its form, function and reliability. You don’t have to worry about replacing it next year or repairing it every few months. It shows up, does its job flawlessly, and is a pleasure to use.

Beyond reliability, there’s something special about great design and craftsmanship. You can feel the care poured into every stitch, weld, or finish. There’s often an interesting story behind its maker and its conception. These are items that become an indispensable part of your life — and sometimes beyond it!

Investing in longevity is also kinder to the planet. Instead of tossing out and replacing, you buy once and use forever. Less waste, fewer resources used, and more appreciation for quality.

Of course it’s easy to be tempted by something that seems like a bargain, only to find it wasn’t built to last. A lifetime product isn’t just a purchase — it’s a commitment to sustainability, craftsmanship, and dependability.

    The Buy Me Once difference

Buy Me Once only sell beautiful, long-lasting products that they believe in. To ensure everything is made to last, they test each product themselves, investigate its manufacturing story, and develop meaningful relationships with the manufacturers. In that way they build a bond of trust with the makers and you, the customer.

Some products carry exclusive warranties, and if products prove not to be up to scratch, Buy Me Once discontinue them.

    An ethical ethos

In a world that’s always trying to sell you more stuff, Buy Me Once is different. Their ethos is a commitment to a more sustainable way to live by offering the highest quality products that will last.

By buying once, we build deeper connections with the things we own. When it gets ‘old’ we don’t throw it away – we restore it, polish it or repair it. The things you will love the most only get better with age.

Buy Me Once… working to reduce waste

Sustainable Innovation: E-waste is the world’s fastest-growing waste stream. Buy Me Once offers sustainable technology that combats throwaway culture while delivering superior performance for years to come.

Made in the UK: Buy Me Once supports British manufacturing because UK-made products offer shorter, more traceable supply chains and significantly lower carbon footprints, as well as products designed with exceptional craftsmanship, durability and built to last.

Supporting artisans: Supporting independent makers and small artisan businesses means supporting traditional craftsmanship while bringing unique, quality pieces into your home.

  • The benefits of green gardening: embracing peat-free coconut coir compost

The benefits of green gardening: embracing peat-free coconut coir compost

    Introduction to green gardening

Green gardening embodies a holistic approach to horticulture, emphasising sustainable practices that minimise environmental impact. By prioritising ecological balance and resource conservation, it offers a viable alternative to traditional gardening methods that often rely heavily on synthetic chemicals and non-renewable resources. At the heart of green gardening is the commitment to nurturing the land while simultaneously enhancing its health and biodiversity.

One of the principal tenets of green gardening is the avoidance of harmful substances. Traditional gardening frequently employs chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides that can leach into groundwater or harm local wildlife. In contrast, green gardening advocates for organic fertilizers and natural pest control methods, fostering a healthier ecosystem that supports beneficial insects and organisms. This not only cultivates a vibrant garden but also contributes to the preservation of natural habitats.

Another critical aspect of green gardening is the efficient use of resources. Practices such as rainwater harvesting and drip irrigation maximise water usage while minimising waste. Green gardeners are encouraged to try and lessen their carbon footprint, by utilising hand tools rather than mechanised ones and engaging in permaculture strategies that harmoniously integrate with local ecosystems.

An essential element of green gardening is the adoption of eco-friendly materials, such as peat-free coconut coir compost, which minimizes the damage caused by peat extraction. The transition towards these sustainable alternatives not only improves soil quality but also supports the global shift towards more responsible gardening practices. By embracing green gardening, individuals can contribute to a more sustainable future, promoting a healthier planet for generations to come.

Understanding peat and its environmental impact

Peat is an organic material that accumulates in waterlogged conditions, typically found in peat bogs and wetlands. Over thousands of years, the slow decomposition of plant material leads to the formation of peat, which has become a popular choice in gardening and horticulture due to its excellent moisture retention, aeration properties, and nutrient-rich nature. However, the reliance on peat in gardening practices raises significant environmental concerns.

The extraction of peat for commercial use causes considerable ecological stresses. When peat is harvested, it disrupts entire ecosystems, leading to habitat destruction for various species that depend on these unique environments. Wetlands play a critical role in biodiversity, and their degradation can result in the loss of flora and fauna, as well as interfering with local climates and water cycles. Moreover, these ecosystems serve as vital carbon sinks, sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Disturbing peatlands releases stored carbon back into the air, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and adding to the  climate change challenge.

In addition to the loss of biodiversity and increased carbon emissions, peat extraction often involves significant land alteration, which can lead to soil degradation and erosion. The primary impacts of these environmental changes can be profound, affecting local communities that depend on surrounding natural resources. As global awareness of sustainability grows, there is an urgent need to adopt more responsible gardening practices that minimize harm to the environment.

Transitioning to peat-free alternatives such as coconut coir compost can help mitigate these detrimental effects. Coconut coir, a byproduct of the coconut industry, offers similar benefits to peat while promoting sustainable practices.

    What is coconut coir compost?

Coconut coir compost is an organic growing medium derived from the fibrous husks of coconuts. This sustainable alternative to peat-based compost has gained popularity among gardeners and horticulturists due to its eco-friendly properties and superior performance in supporting plant growth. The production of coconut coir compost involves harvesting the coir fibers from mature coconuts, typically from coconut plantations in tropical regions. After the saturation of the husk in water to soften it, the fibers are extracted, processed, and then transformed into a nutrient-rich substrate suitable for planting.

One of the standout characteristics of coconut coir is its remarkable moisture retention capacity. It can hold water up to eight times its weight while still providing an ideal balance of moisture and air for root development. This high moisture retention makes coir an excellent choice for gardeners, particularly in arid climates or for those looking to conserve water. Furthermore, coconut coir provides excellent aeration, allowing for optimum oxygen exchange, a crucial factor for healthy root growth. Unlike peat, which can become compacted and dense over time, coconut coir remains loose and well-aerated, promoting robust plant growth.

In addition to its functional benefits, coconut coir compost is also pH neutral, typically ranging between 5.5 to 6.8. This neutrality enables a wide variety of plants to thrive, as it does not adversely affect nutrient availability. The composition of coconut coir, which includes lignin and cellulose, facilitates the slow release of nutrients, making it a beneficial substrate for both seedlings and mature plants. Overall, by opting for coconut coir compost, gardeners not only support sustainable practices but also utilise a versatile and effective medium that enhances their gardening.

In summary, integrating coconut coir compost into your gardening  can significantly enhance soil health. Its ability to improve soil structure, retain moisture, facilitate aeration, and support beneficial microbial activity makes it an invaluable resource for gardeners looking to cultivate vibrant and thriving plants.

Embracing sustainable gardening for a greener future

Ultimately, embracing green gardening principles is not only an investment in the health of our gardens but also in the wellbeing of our planet. By making informed choices and prioritizing sustainable materials such as coconut coir compost, we can collectively contribute to a greener future for generations to come.
